The Unchecked Mind
Advanced Perinatal OCD & The Art of Holding
Available spots
The treatment of perinatal OCD can be challenging and uncomfortable, not just for patients, but for clinicians, as well. Are there pieces of the process that continue to make you uncomfortable? What are some common mistakes and traps that clinicians fall into when providing this treatment? How do we maintain a holding environment for new parents while also encouraging them to confront their fears? Intrusive thoughts about harming, contaminating, or losing an infant are far more common than most clinicians realize. They are also far more treatable than most patients believe. The challenge lies not only in knowing the evidence base, but in developing the clinical steadiness to stay regulated when the content is disturbing, the stakes feel high, and the patient is asking for certainty we cannot provide. This training offers clinicians a comprehensive framework for understanding, assessing, and treating perinatal OCD. Participants will explore perinatal intrusive thoughts across five content domains and examine the five most common clinical errors that can lead us astray. The training will allow clinicians to process the complex fusion of holding principles and exposure based treatment. Case vignettes and clinical scenarios are used throughout to apply these concepts to complex presentations involving religious and cultural overlays, sleep deprivation, trauma, mandatory reporting, and ambivalent motivation. It will provide insight into the phenomenology, differential dx considerations and treatment planning with particular attention to the clinician's own anxiety. 4 CE hrs The Postpartum Stress Center, LLC has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7461.
