Symptoms of perinatal distress often share many of the same characteristics as obsessive-compulsive disorder. So how do we distinguish one from the other when we are faced with these types of intrusive thoughts? How do we treat these symptoms in a way that considers the nuances specific to the perinatal period? As clinicians, perspective and understanding are paramount to providing calm, directed care for parents having these painful experiences. This training aims to provide an introduction to the diagnosis, treatment, and conceptualization of obsessive-compulsive symptoms often found in the perinatal population. Presenter: Noah Suzuki, LPC, Perinatal Mental Health Counselor, The Postpartum Stress Center, will introduce the symptom profile obsessive-compulsive distress associated with the perinatal period and explore case examples and treatment approaches that can be applied to individual cases. Description: This workshop provides background in counseling theory and practice surrounding obsessive-compulsive symptoms during the perinatal period. It will provide participants insight into the assessment of these symptoms and provide direction in treatment planning. This pertains to NBCC content areas: Counseling Theory/Practice and the Counseling Relationship and Assessment. Learning Objectives: 1. Participants will be introduced to the diagnostic profile of obsessions, compulsions, and perinatal distress 2. Participants will learn how to distinguish between traditional perinatal anxiety and obsessive-compulsive anxiety 3. Participants will discuss the nuances and common themes of obsessive-compulsive symptoms during the perinatal period 4. Participants will discuss empirically-supported treatments for obsessive-compulsive symptoms that can be used in a perinatal population 5. Participants will be invited to discuss relevant cases and receive consultation. 1.5 CE hrs The Postpartum Stress Center, LLC has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 7461. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. The Postpartum Stress Center, LLC is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.
