Therapists' current life experiences, as well as past narratives can intersect with patient circumstance, symptoms, personality as well as implicit biases to create instances that are difficult for therapists to navigate and hold. For this reason, we are seeing staggering rates of therapist burnout, as therapists continue to focus outwardly on patient care rather than inwardly on themselves. This is uniquely true in the treatment of perinatal populations. The understanding of countertransference, what it means and how it can be navigated is absent in many therapeutic trainings and in perinatal training in particular. This training will explore the integration of mindful self compassion, with psychoanalytic understandings of countertransference and will work to improve the therapist's capacity to effectively support the hard to hold by relying on the art of holding as a road map and standard of care. For perinatal clients, the goal is for them to feel recognized, seen and safe so that they can effectively attune to their children and foster secure attachment bonds. As a participant, the art of holding as a therapeutic modality will be briefly introduced. You will then be guided through both in session self regulation strategies as well as out of session reflection prompts that can be used to help you reflect on your own mind and body with compassion. Dr. Cotler's unique training and approach have seen significant impact and her message of hope and resilience teaches that we all have the capacity to move through when we don’t feel alone and are provided with the guidance and holding of a skilled professional.
