Prerequisites for Level I & II: Fundamentals of PPD Training

  • A Masters or doctoral level counseling degree

  • Exceptions may be made on an individual basis for non-counsling degrees, such as nursing when applicable. Please contact the PPSC.

  • Graduate students in accredited mental health programs are welcome and must provide verification

  • A minimum of two (2) years of post-degree outpatient clinical experience

  • Attendance is limited to serious clinicians who are interested in deepening their knowledge of prenatal and postpartum mood and anxiety disorders and are committed to developing this area of expertise.

Objectives of 10 hr level I & II Training

Fundamentals of PPD (6hrs Friday)
Participants will learn:

  • Differential diagnosis of baby blues, postpartum depression, postpartum OCD, postpartum anxiety disorder, panic and postpartum psychosis

  • How to assess severity of illness and determine intervention options: self-help measures, medication, psychotherapy, hospitalization, supportive counseling

  • To determine when a referral for psychiatric consultation or other collaboration is appropriate

  • How to translate psychodynamics into short-term, solution-oriented approach to symptom resolution

  • Preventative treatment options to assist women with previous PPD episode planning another pregnancy

  • How to identify a woman at risk and the importance of screening and preventative support

  • How therapy for postpartum depression differs from traditional therapy

  • How to address the unique and challenging needs of the postpartum woman in crisis

  • How to best use your own self, your strengths, your spirit, to augment recovery

Advanced Practice Development Workshop: Launching your private practice (4hrs Saturday)
Participants will learn:

  • How to navigate clinical challenges and obstacles that are specific to this client population

  • How to establish and maintain a private practice with a specialty in postpartum mood disorders

  • Which marketing strategies are most effective for this population of clients and the medical community

  • Tools & techniques for clinical practice management

  • How to connect with the community at large and maximize the need and desire for your services

  • What works and what doesn’t work in therapy and in the larger community, when specializing in this area

  • To set personal goals and explore individual areas of vulnerability
