The Postpartum Stress Center was founded in 1988 by Karen Kleiman, MSW. The Center was established to provide a better understanding and comprehensive clinical intervention for any woman who suffers from the range of postpartum psychiatric disorders. The treatment program is divided into four phases. The first is an initial diagnostic assessment made by a therapist consisting of a thorough history and discussion of treatment options. Second, after further consultation, it is determined whether a psychiatric evaluation is required, as well as further exploration of symptom development, course of illness, personal resources and self-help strategies. The third phase is aimed at providing ongoing symptom relief. Particular attention is paid to the woman's diet, sleep patterns, child management, availability of support at home. Risk factors are assessed and strategies for short-term coping are discussed.

The final phase is one that leads the woman into short-term therapy to address issues that have surfaced as a result of this crisis, issues related to self-esteem, sexuality, marital conflict, family of origin issues, fear of failure, transition to motherhood, expectations of perfection, etc. Many women opt not to enter into this phase of treatment, and prefer to end treatment at the first sign of symptom relief. This is not recommended, although about half of the women treated will choose this option. In this case, further support and treatment options are always made available to any woman who may require services at any time, should her symptoms worsen.

Husbands are encouraged to attend the initial session and may participate in the program to any extent they feel would be beneficial.

The Postpartum Stress Center is pleased to announce the expansion of our practice to include outpatient services for children/adolescents (ages 3+) and their families.

The Postpartum Stress & Family Wellness Center offers a strengths-based, family-centered approach to treatment and encourages family members to be a part of their child’s treatment process. The Postpartum Stress & Family Wellness Center will assist families in seeking related community resources and collaborate with supportive services as needed.
